OUTSURANCE

If I’d known that today would be the last normal day in my life for many months to come, I might have made more effort to stop and smell the roses.

It was near 3:00 p.m. when my secretary came into my office to say there was a man to see me. I stood and walked around my desk as she led him in, but he ignored my outstretched hand. Well, ignored it for a handshake. He took advantage of my stance to thrust an A4 envelope into it with the words, ‘You’ve been served’.

COMPULSION

BROOKE REGARDED HERSELF in the bathroom mirror. She was flushed and dishevelled. She held her breath and stood perfectly still. She knew that the smallest movement, even the merest thought, and the zing in her belly, the nerves strung so tight they were like a corset, would twang. Read More …

GAZUMPED

My mind is still split on whether or not I have it in me to inflict the amount of pain I know I’m about to on an innocent party who in no way deserves what is about to go down in the next half-an-hour or so. But I look at the poster-sized photograph of me and Dave on our wedding day hanging above the mantlepiece, through eyes that have shed their last tear over the decline of my mostly happy twenty-eight-year marriage. Those tears happened the whole time I was debating whether or not to go through with this conversation. The conclusion is yes, but I’m still fighting the urge to flee. Dave is going to be devastated. AUDIO: Barbara Gets Shelved

Hi One and All,

This post is us – Van1 and CTC – narrating one of our collaborative works: Barbara Gets Shelved.
There is no visual component, though we have since figured out how to do that so for any forthcoming audios of our works we can add images.
Let us know your thoughts as to whether you’d like to have us narrate any more of our stories, and which ones.
Or perhaps you’d like to send through some questions we could answer, or perhaps interview each other with. Read More …

NURSE PENNY

PENELOPE, OR PENNY as I’ve always called her, and I have been married for twenty-eight years. Our twenty-eighth year marked an ending but also a beginning. It was the year our third and youngest child started college. We’d just dropped her off. That made us officially empty-nesters.

I wanted to use the opportunity to try to rekindle Penny’s and my love life which had waned during the marriage, due mostly to lack of energy and privacy. As working-class people, we have a small house with thin walls, not a huge mansion with nannies and maids. Read More …

BARBARA GETS SHELVED

OKAY, I ADMIT IT, I’m a people watcher. Naturally introverted, I like sitting back, watching people, then trying to guess what they do for a living, what they’re thinking, etcetera. I do it more when I’m bored or trying to distract myself. It started when I was a kid and involved in a six-car pile-up on the Hume Highway. Luckily, neither I nor my grandparents were killed, but things got broken. Lots of things got broken, like both my legs, my wrist, my collarbone, a few vertebrae. The list goes on. Read More …

The Evisceration

“Dave, what aren’t you telling me? The secretary of the diocese just rang. I’ve been asked to resign from all the church committees I’m on. I mean, not just give up the chairmanships, but get off the committees altogether. They wouldn’t say why. What happened Saturday night? What did I do after I drank too much?” Read More …
